Rules of the Game

Updated March 6, 2021

  1. ST13 will be played online live on March 20, 2021, using the Crowdpurr trivia platform.
  2. All players must be registered with an email address for delivery of the game link and have a computer or smartphone and high-speed internet access.
  3. Teams of up to 6 players can be registered (including each player’s email address) by the Team Captain or formed before gameday from individually-registered players. Teams are welcome to collaborate in any manner they see fit (e.g., socially distanced in-person, by Zoom call, etc.), but each individual player needs to answer each question through the Crowdpurr online platform.
  4. THIS IS A CLOSED-BOOK TEST. You are welcome to collaborate with your teammates, but NO INTERNET SEARCHES OR OTHER OUTSIDE SOURCES ARE ALLOWED. Keep it fun and fair for everyone and please don’t cheat. Play by the Honor System and remember: if you cheat at SGMS Sports Trivia, you will go straight to hell.
  5. There will be 5 rounds of questions. Some questions may require more than one answer and questions may have different point values.
  6. Questions will be read, played and/or shown only once, and will primarily be displayed on the Crowdpurr online platform.
  7. Players will have approximately 30 seconds to answer each question (i.e., after the reading of a question there will be a 30-second pause during which time players will need to submit their answers). The time to answer some questions may be adjusted based on the nature of the question or requested answer. An unanswered question is recorded as an incorrect answer.
  8. Format and timing of questions may be adjusted in certain rounds. Please pay attention to the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for specific instructions.
  9. After each round of questions, before the next round begins, the correct answers to the questions from that previous round will be provided.
  10. There will be Individual and Team competitions. A Team’s score will be the average of its individual players’ scores. After all rounds are complete, the Individual player with the most points will be the winner of the Individual competition and the Team with the most points will be the winner of the Team competition.
  11. In the event of a tie for first place, there will be one additional question asked early in the event, with the Team or Individual answer “closest to the pin” declared the winner. MC will provide additional specifics prior to this question.
  12. In the event of all other ties, the following tie-breakers will be applied: (a) average score per round [1]; (b) combined points in the 3rd and 4th rounds; (c) points in the 6th round; (d) coin toss; (e) team that has LEAST amount of hair (on team members’ heads, not backs).

Please remember that Sports Trivia Night is a fundraiser for the charitable activities of the St. Giles Men’s Society. Like other SGMS events, the primary purpose of this event is fellowship. This is NOT a Retreads Basketball playoff game, so please DO NOT take the event too seriously. There is no money or extravagant prizes to be won – just the adoration of the entire country. And bragging rights for the next 12 months. We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of our questions and answers and to have a fair balance of questions, across all “sports”[2] and sports trivia skill levels.

Thank you for participating and we hope you have a great time!

[1] The "John Weicher Rule"

[2] Over the vigorous objection of numerous SGMS Sports Trivia Committee Members, Soccer, Olympics, Horse Racing, MMA, Cycling and other recreational activities are considered "sports" for purposes of this event.
